Greening Your Vendors

by Helen on February 5, 2008

This may not come as a surprise, but ALL green weddings don’t take place in San Francisco or Portland. (Both cities have a sizable choice of eco event businesses.) For many areas of the country, the local green vendor options are slim, at best.

Many components of a wedding must be created locally. What do you do when your wedding will be in the very conservative town your fiance grew up in? What about destination weddings? How do you find the right local vendors to help you?

Chances are, no matter where your wedding is being held, you will be working with some vendors who haven’t a clue about sustainability practices. (Some may not understand what the big deal is — and they may even think you’re a bit dotty for caring.)

Granted, you are paying them, and it’s their job to get it right. But, your Green Wedding is also an opportunity for a teaching experience.

You teaching your vendor, the Expert.

First and foremost, be gentle, don’t be a Greenzilla. (not the time for global warming lectures..)

How you comport yourself may be just the inspiration they need to rethink some of their practices. The newly greened vendor may just pass on the experience they had with your wedding to their next clients.
