Current obsession: compostable and biodegradable plastics for disposable foodware. SO EXCITING. I’ve seen some of the starch based plastics at various trade shows, but those were disappointing compared to petro-plastics. Finally, the resin plastics are ready for primetime in terms of function and price.
The petro plastics take 500 years or more to break down in a landfill. Also, they leech nasty chemicals back into the earth. These compostable starch resin plastics break down in about 3 months in commercial compost sites. No nasty chemicals, either.
How do we make starch plastics the norm — FAST.
We event producters can help a bit. Though most people would rather die than use disposable dinnerware for their wedding, it may be used for brunches, barbecues and other informal parties associated with weddings. Maybe the next thing to do is print (soy inks) some groovy artwork on some of the plates to punch up the style a bit. Especially for special event usage.
Special (corporate) Events and high visibility usage does help to change minds and create markets. People focus more on things at hand during “Special” events –talk to each other, comment. The social situation is a great time to introduce new concepts for commodity products.
Here are a list of resources, some of the companies currently supplying biodegradable plastic food service ware:
Harvest Collection The choices are basic food service ware, nothing fancy. But, completely compostable and biodegradable.
Wheatware has a great collection of fun products. Including a yo-yo, guitar picks (Patrick, who plays lead guitar for Dust Pilots) says the picks have great action and are his new favorite) — as well as pretty cool looking chopsticks.
